    Fireplace Safety

    Written by Robyn Prasek

The glass on the front of a vented fireplace has recently been identified as a potential burn hazard by the CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission) and the HPBA (Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association).  For an hour or more after the fire place has been turned off – the glass can remain dangerously hot.

Who faces the greatest risk of injury?

Those that do not understand the potential for the injuries due to accidently tripping or falling and coming into contact with the hot glass surface.  This includes kids, elderly, pets, and the infirmed.

What to do to prevent such accidents from occurring?

It is being recommended that some form of a fixed barrier be placed between the glass and its surrounding.  As of January 1, 2015 - units will come with a screen that must be installed. (See: Safety Mandate for New Glass Front Fireplaces).

If you choose an aftermarket Attachable Safety Screen (one that fastens to the front of a fireplace) – make sure that the screen is approved by the manufacturer of your gas appliance.

It is important that you explain fireplace, fireplace insert, and gas stove safety those most at risk that are living in your home.  They should never touch the glass on the appliance – whether the unit was on or not.

When having company over that can be unfamiliar with the surroundings in your home – make them aware that your gas fireplace, fireplace insert, or stove is (or was) in operation and that the unit (especially the glass) can be hot.

Always supervise what could be going on in and around where your unit is installed.  Surrounding surfaces on your unit such as decorative doors and trim also have the potential to retain some heat.

Also keep your remote somewhere where young children cannot reach.

All gas-fired, certified fireplaces manufactured after January 1, 2015 will include a safety screen that must be installed.

Rigorous testing will ensure these safety screens are effective in preventing serious, irreversible burns.
