    Forklift Cylinders 101

    Written by Steve Welch

I’d like to walk everyone though some basic knowledge about forklift cylinders. Specifically, what they are, how they’re installed, and other useful facts. Consider this forklift cylinders 101.

Forklifts primarily use 33 lb. cylinders as their fuel source and are equipped for liquid service. If installed improperly the result can be loss of power or ever complete loss of service. Despite these forklift cylinders falling within the 5-40 lb. class of cylinder they aren't required to have an OPD valve in order to be refueled. A scale isn't even required to fill these cylinders so they can even be filled from a delivery truck. Typically, 33 lb. forklift cylinders will run for about 8 hours of continual service.

In order to properly install forklift cylinders, put the cylinder on the locating pin. The locating pin on the forklift’s cylinder bracket serves four purposes. First, it positions the cylinder properly for the hose and fitting alignment to connect without twisting or stretching the hose. Second, it ensures that the pressure relief is in an upright position in the vapor space of the tank so the valve won’t spray fuel. Third, it aligns the main valve pick-up tube inside the tank to get almost all the fuel out of it. Finally, it allows the fuel gauge to be read easily. Once the cylinder is secure, connect the fuel line making sure it’s not leaking and are in good shape. Replace it if necessary.

Forklift cylinders can be made from either steel or aluminum and come in a variety of sizes including 22 lbs., 33 lbs. And 42 lbs. The wide foot ring provides stability while the forklift cylinder remains in the upright position. The top color protects the fittings and provides a hole for proper mounting. When these forklift cylinders are not in use they should be installed in a storage cabinet made for motor fuel tanks.
